Work continues

The cold weather in December held back the work progress on straw homes. As soon as the big freeze was gone we continued the work and we aim to finish the project in May 2011.

The rendering work has started and straw is now completely covered.

In the meantime we have announced three lucky winners in the straw bale drawing competition. Lilliana Wright Class 4, Toby Bere Year 1 and Lauren Gamble Class 3 from local Mrs Mary King’s C.E. School in Martin were presented with their awards at a ceremony during the school assembly. We have also presented the school with a photo book which serves as a reminder of the visit in September last year.

Please see below for the photos from the award ceremony.

The remains of the straw

The work on the homes is progressing well and all of the walls are now fully built. We have also started construction of the roofs. Our next steps include finishing the interiors so that we can start on electrical and mechanical work.

Soon you will not be able to see any straw as we will start rendering the walls with lime both outside and inside.

Invasion of small builders

Straw Bale project is generating a lot of interest among our clients. After hosting a successful open day on 28th September 2010 we invited children from a local school in Martin to see this unique build.

Pupils were very excited and they joyfully put on hard hats and high visibility vests so that they could enjoy a guided tour of the construction site. The bunch looked like clones of Bob the builder.

Children learned about the environmental features of the homes and were given a talk about Health and Safety on the construction site.

We also organised a drawing competition where they had to present how they imagined the houses would look once they were completed. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony during the school assembly.
